Building Inspection

The Summit County Building Inspection Department is where all building permit processes begin. We take in all permit applications, route them to relevant internal review agencies, issue building permits, enforce code requirements and conduct building inspections.

The Building Inspection Department is typically unavailable Wednesday mornings until 10:30 am for our weekly staff meeting.

The Community Development Department will be closed Monday Sept 2nd for Labor Day. Inspections will resume Tuesday Sept 3rd.

Building Permit Submittal

All building permits, technical permits, plans, plan changes and hard copies of the application materials should be submitted in person by a representative who can answer submittal related questions. Electronic, mailed-in, and couriered services for drop-off submittals will NOT be accepted. Payment for permit applications can be paid via cash, regular check, e-check, ($1 fee) or Credit Card (processing fees of $0.75 plus 2.25% will apply to credit card payments). Payment for plan review is required at the time of submittal. Building permit application submittals will not be accepted after 4:30 p.m.

Building Permits

Per the International Building Code (IBC) and the International Residential Code (IRC), permits are required for all new structures, alterations to existing structures, remodels, decks, hot tubs and window replacements. We do not require a permit for re-roofing unless the scope of work includes structural changes to the roof.

Codes & Amendments

The Building Inspection Department has adopted the 2018 International Code Council (ICC) code series for all permitted projects. We enforce the 2023 National Electric Code. We have adopted a sustainable building code (pdf) with which every new single-family residence (SFR) in Summit County must comply.
